What is a Colostomy?

A colostomy is a surgically-created opening in the abdominal wall through which one end of the colon is brought outside the abdomen. This is done to allow a portion of damaged or diseased colon time to heal – usually after bowel surgery or injury.

It also changes the way that the body passes stool. Solid waste is no longer excreted through the anus and will now exit through the newly-created stoma.

What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a minimally-invasive procedure designed to screen for colon cancer and remove colon polyps. It involves inserting a long, flexible tube into the rectum and advancing it through the colon to visualize the large intestine and look for any abnormal growths.

If any abnormal growths are detected, a sample of tissue can be collected for a biopsy.

A colonoscopy is a screening tool and, while it can remove colon polyps, it does not affect the functioning of the large intestine.

As such, each procedure serves a unique purpose and is performed for very different reasons.
